Molecular Imaging Program

To respond to social demand and the new tide of advancing science, MEXT of Japan launched a new program called the "Molecular Imaging Research Program" in 2005. The purpose of this program is the application of imaging technology, mainly PET, to assist in the development of drug discovery and new technology for diagnosis and evaluation of treatment. Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) publicly sought to establish two research bases, "Research Base for PET Diagnosis" and "Research Base for Exploring New Drugs", as the organization responsible for working on those objectives.

The Molecular Imaging Center (MIC) has been selected for the "Research Base for PET Diagnosis", as NIRS has great advantages in work related to molecular imaging research.

As the research base, MIC set out to develop and become familiarized with fundamental technologies, establish the world's largest molecular probe library consisting of molecular probes labeled with super-high specific activity, and perform research for observational studies on pathological conditions, diagnostic methods and therapy evaluation for various diseases.
