Division of Radioecology
Division of Marine Radioecology

Laboratory for Radioecology, located at Nakaminato, Ibaraki Prefecture, consists of two Divisions (Radioecology and Marine Radioecology) and an Administration Section.
Since the establishment of NIRS, the environmental behavior of radionuclides has been one of the main subjects of study.
A Division(Radioactive Contamination) at Chiba campus had responsibility for the environmental radioactivity study.
In 1968, when planning of a spent fuel reprocessing plant case on schedule, the Institute decided to set up a laboratory to study marine radioecology at Nakaminato. The main aim of study at the laboratory was to obtain values of concentration factors of more important radionuclides for various marine organisms.
In 1975, with development of the peacefull use of atomic energy, the Division and the laboratory were amalgamated to form the present organization. The objective of the studies at Nakaminato is to estimate and assess exposure of the population to radionuclides in the various sectors of the human environment, including atmospheric and terrestrial sectors as well as marine sectors.
Details of the studies are described under the section of the respective divisions.
