Contributions for NIRS
NIRS contributes to healthy life, safe and secure society throughout radiological sciences.

We appreciate your continuous support and understanding for National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS).
NIRS was established in 1957 as a national institute under the jurisdiction of Science and Technology Agency, with the purpose of comprehensive research on the effects of radiation, and on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of radiation injury, and medical use of radiation.
We have been pursuing research activities that cover vast territory of radiological sciences from basic research to radiological diagnosis and radiation therapy, succeeding the visionary mission of the institute in early days of medical and industrial application of radiation.
Positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, which is now popularly used in clinical diagnosis, was developed at NIRS as early as in 1979. Charged particle radiotherapy using high energy carbon beams was established in NIRS and put into clinical practice for the first time in the world. It has been applied to more than 6,000 patients, which proved the excellent outcome of the treatment. We now plan to expand the results to the other institutions in the world, so that many patients can receive the benefit of this treatment, providing the opportunity to cure cancer patients maintaining high quality of life (QOL).
NIRS reformed its structure into an independent administrative institution in 2001 according to the government policy. The achievements and experiences of NIRS during the past half century are highly regarded from international society, and NIRS was designated by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Collaboration Center in the field of low-dose radiation effect, molecular imaging and charged particle therapy. We are determined to strengthen our activities in these fields as “NIRS of the world”. The great East-Japan earthquake on 11 March 2011 and TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station accidents make us reconsider how the civilized society we have built should be from now (or? in the future). We would like to extend our deepest condolences to all the affected people and their relatives. NIRS is willing to contribute to reconstruction through the basic radiation research results which we have acquired as well as the knowledge of radiation emergency medicine as “NIRS visible to the society”.
Recently, people are much concerned about the effects of radiation on human body. On the other hand, medical and industrial application of radiation is growing rapidly, and our civilized society is closely connected with radiation, whether we wish or not. Through our variety of activities from basic research to medical use of radiation, NIRS will exert all its efforts to achieve “NIRS in the history” as an International Center of Excellence in the field of radiation sciences and radiology, aiming to return the research outcome to the society.
Donations for NIRS support our activities and encourage us, and all the staff of NIRS are ready to respond to your expectation. We cordially appreciate your kind support to NIRS.
